We finished up MAP Reading testing today. If students did not finish, they will be pulled from classes next week to complete it. NExt week in ELA, we will start reading the book, The Boy of the Painted Cave. The book ties into our Social Studies curriculum and focuses on early clans and cave painting.

Today we continued to teacher conference with our personal narratives. We also looked closely at synonyms for said in our texts, so we can in turn become stronger writers. The students presented their Hominid arguments. The winners are..... Mrs Duffield's homeroom- Lucy and Mr Kruger's Homeroom- Homo Sapiens Sapiens.

In Social Studies, students are working in groups to create a persuasive visual and speech to convince the class that their assigned hominid group is the MOST capable. In Science, we read about flight and looked at vocabulary words related to flight.

We continue to add to our list of what strong narrative writing looks like, especially after reading a mentor text written by James Howe. In SS, we are getting close to picking our Early People Project topic. As readers we also look for strong narrative strategies in the books we are reading. We should always read like a writer and vise versa! We had day 2 of our air trolley lab in Science.

Today we continued to look at how to generate writing topics. Tomorrow in ELA, we will choose a small moment topic that we take through the entire writing process. We also discussed our Early People Project, which I will send information electronically later today. In Science, we started an air trolley lab.

In Language Arts today we discussed strong narrative writing strategies. We analyzed a 6th grade writing sample and identified strategies. Some of the ideas we came up with: precise word choice, creating a movie in my mind, dialogue (not too much), metaphor/simile, and internal dialogue. We will used these strategies to assist with our writing and reading next week.

Good afternoon! Today was a flurry of activity. We discussed many procedures; that will become easier and easier to follow as the weeks go by. Students took home a t-shirt order form today, please have them return it tomorrow. If it did not come home, please make sure your child knows what size t-shirt (adults sizes) they wear as they are getting a free Hamilton t-shirt! Some students did already turn them in to us.
