About the talk

The Rising Star cave system in South Africa contains the largest known assemblage of fossil human relatives ever found in Africa, all belonging to a previously unknown species, Homo naledi. Earlier this year, the Rising Star research team revealed that these fossils may be as recent as 236,000 years old, meaning that this primitive extinct species existed around the same time as the origin of modern humans. The team also announced the discovery of a second bone chamber with more remains of H. naledi — including a nearly complete skeleton they named Neo. Professor Hawks will discuss how these findings change our view of human evolution. He is returning from the excavation in September and will give the first report of this new work.
